Quilted Archives

Quilted Archives

Quilted Archives is a collage series of critically fabulated intimate queer moments throughout Jamaica’s history. A proclamation that queerness has always existed despite limited documentation and destroyed history. Each piece carries hand-drawn illustrations and archival photos that are cropped, layered, and double exposed to create reimagined narratives rooted in academic research on queer Caribbean history.

While illustrations symbolizes play, unrestricted, and queer culture.

EIGNTY

Inspired by Omise'eke Natasha Tinsley's book, Thiefing Sugar, Tinsley affirms women-to-women sexual and romantic intimacy throughout history in the Caribbean. Sovereignty reimagines the artwork on the cover of Tinsley’s book, "Three Caribbean washerwomen by a river" painted by Agostino Brunias in the late 1700s. By removing the male and colonizer's gaze, these two women are free to playfully admire each other's company in private.
